Astronaut Discloses Mental Health Struggle Following Wave of Harassment Post-Spaceflight
A pioneering space traveler has publicly detailed her struggle with mental health after being subjected to a relentless barrage of criticism in the aftermath of a pioneering women-only spaceflight.
Amanda Nguyen – recognized as a researcher and activist – was part of the 11-minute suborbital flight earlier this year, which also featured celebrity crewmates.
The mission was widely scrutinized by some, who questioned its cost and environmental footprint.
Reflecting on the situation, the astronaut, who was celebrated as the first Vietnamese woman in space, stated the vicious response eclipsed her moment under an “avalanche of misogyny”.
“I told her my depression might last for years,” she recounted in a online statement, recalling a check-in call from a fellow crew member in the period after the journey.
She described the press attention and digital reaction as an “onslaught no human brain has evolved to endure”.
“For a full week, I was bedridden and couldn't leave my Texas location,” she revealed. “A month later… I had to hang up… because I could not speak through my tears.”
Overshadowed by Sexism
The researcher, who has dedicated her work to gynecological science and performed experiments during the flight, said all her lifelong efforts – from her scientific research and years of training to the symbolic importance of her roots – was drowned out under the tide of misogyny.
She is most acclaimed for her pioneering work championing the cause of survivors of assault.
Her own aspiration for spaceflight was put on hold after being assaulted during her college days, leading to a years-long quest for justice.
Finding Solid Ground
Months following achieving her goal, she noted the heaviest sorrow is beginning to clear, and she expressed gratitude the followers whose messages of encouragement pulled her through. “You were my salvation,” she said.
She noted that despite the negativity, important benefits had come out of the experience, such as increased focus on her scientific work and new advocacy opportunities.
About the Mission
The computer-piloted spacecraft departed Texas in the spring, carrying the historic roster on a short trip that crossed the edge of outer space.
The group of women also featured experts in different industries.
The venture behind the mission is a commercial aerospace company founded by a prominent billionaire entrepreneur.
