‘It appears magical’: does light therapy actually deliver clearer skin, healthier teeth, and more resilient joints?
Light-based treatment is certainly having a moment. Consumers can purchase glowing gadgets for everything from complexion problems and aging signs along with sore muscles and oral inflammation, recently introduced is an oral care tool enhanced with tiny red LEDs, promoted by the creators as “a significant discovery in personal mouth health.” Worldwide, the sector valued at $1bn last year is expected to increase to $1.8bn within the next decade. There are even infrared saunas available, which use infrared light to warm the body directly, your body is warmed directly by infrared light. As claimed by enthusiasts, it feels similar to a full-body light therapy session, stimulating skin elasticity, relaxing muscles, reducing swelling and long-term ailments while protecting against dementia.
The Science and Skepticism
“It feels almost magical,” observes Paul Chazot, who has researched light therapy for two decades. Naturally, we know light influences biological functions. Sunlight enables vitamin D production, crucial for strong bones, immune defense, and tissue repair. Sunlight regulates our circadian rhythms, additionally, triggering the release of neurochemicals and hormones while we are awake, and preparing the body for rest as darkness falls. Sunlight-imitating lamps are a common remedy for people with seasonal affective disorder (Sad) to boost low mood in winter. Clearly, light energy is essential for optimal functioning.
Different Light Modalities
Whereas seasonal affective disorder devices typically employ blue-range light, the majority of phototherapy tools use red or near-infrared wavelengths. During advanced medical investigations, such as Chazot’s investigations into the effects of infrared on brain cells, identifying the optimal wavelength is crucial. Light constitutes electromagnetic energy, which runs the spectrum from the lowest-energy, longest wavelengths (radio waves) to high-energy gamma radiation. Therapeutic light application uses wavelengths around the middle of this spectrum, including invisible ultraviolet radiation, then the visible spectrum we perceive as colors and then infrared (which we can see with night-vision goggles).
Dermatologists have utilized UV therapy for extensive periods to treat chronic skin conditions such as eczema, psoriasis and vitiligo. It affects cellular immune responses, “and reduces inflammatory processes,” notes a skin specialist. “Substantial research supports light therapy.” UVA penetrates skin more deeply than UVB, whereas the LEDs we see on consumer light-therapy devices (which generally deliver red, infrared or blue light) “generally affect surface layers.”
Safety Considerations and Medical Oversight
The side-effects of UVB exposure, like erythema or pigmentation, are well known but in medical devices the light is delivered in a “narrow-band” form – indicating limited wavelength spectrum – which decreases danger. “Therapy is overseen by qualified practitioners, meaning intensity is regulated,” notes the specialist. Most importantly, the devices are tuned by qualified personnel, “to ensure that the wavelength that’s being delivered is fit for purpose – as opposed to commercial tanning facilities, where oversight might be limited, and we don’t really know what wavelengths are being used.”
Consumer Devices and Evidence Gaps
Red and blue LEDs, he explains, “aren’t typically employed clinically, though they might benefit some issues.” Red light devices, some suggest, help boost blood circulation, oxygen absorption and skin cell regeneration, and stimulate collagen production – a primary objective in youth preservation. “Studies are available,” comments the expert. “Although it’s not strong.” Regardless, amid the sea of devices now available, “we don’t know whether or not the lights emitted are reflective of the research that has been done. Optimal treatment times are unknown, how close the lights should be to the skin, whether or not that will increase the risk versus the benefit. Numerous concerns persist.”
Targeted Uses and Expert Opinions
Initial blue-light devices addressed acne bacteria, bacteria linked to pimples. Research support isn’t sufficient for standard medical recommendation – although, says Ho, “it’s often seen in medical spas or aesthetics practices.” Some of his patients use it as part of their routine, he observes, but if they’re buying a device for home use, “we recommend careful testing and security confirmation. Unless it’s a medical device, the regulation is a bit grey.”
Innovative Investigations and Molecular Effects
Simultaneously, in innovative scientific domains, researchers have been testing neural cells, revealing various pathways for light-enhanced cell function. “Virtually all experiments with specific wavelengths showed beneficial and safeguarding effects,” he states. Multiple claimed advantages have created skepticism toward light treatment – that results appear unrealistic. However, scientific investigation has altered his perspective.
The scientist mainly develops medications for neurological conditions, though twenty years earlier, a physician creating light-based cold sore therapy requested his biological knowledge. “He designed tools for biological testing,” he says. “I was pretty sceptical. It was an unusual wavelength of about 1070 nanometres, that nobody believed did anything biological.”
Its beneficial characteristic, though, was its efficient water penetration, allowing substantial bodily penetration.
Mitochondrial Impact and Cognitive Support
Growing data suggested infrared influenced energy-producing organelles. Mitochondria produce ATP for cell function, generating energy for them to function. “Mitochondria exist throughout the body, including the brain,” says Chazot, who concentrated on cerebral applications. “Studies demonstrate enhanced cerebral circulation with light treatment, which is always very good.”
With specific frequency application, cellular power plants create limited oxidative molecules. In limited quantities these molecules, notes the scientist, “stimulates so-called chaperone proteins which look after your mitochondria, protect cellular integrity and manage defective proteins.”
Such mechanisms indicate hope for cognitive disorders: antioxidant, inflammation reduction, and waste removal – autophagy being the process the cell uses to clear unwanted damaging proteins.
Present Investigation Status and Expert Assessments
Upon examining current studies on light therapy for dementia, he reports, about 400 people were taking part in four studies, comprising his early research projects
