Substantial Web Disruption Affects Many Websites and Mobile Apps

A large-scale online disruption has disrupted many online platforms and applications worldwide, as users noting issues connecting to the web due to difficulties at Amazon’s cloud computing service.

The impacted apps encompass the social media app Snapchat, Roblox, Signal, and the language learning app Duolingo, along with a host of Amazon-operated platforms including its key e-commerce site and the Ring doorbell doorbell company.

In the UK, Lloyds bank was affected along with its branches Halifax and the Scottish bank, and additional accounts of difficulties using the HMRC site on the start of the week. Also in the UK, multiple Ring device owners turned to networks to report their doorbells were failing.

Just within Britain, accounts of problems on particular platforms ran into the thousands for each platform.

Amazon reported that the problem originated in the east coast of the America at AWS, a section that supplies vital online backbone for many businesses, who utilize resources on the company's servers. AWS is the most extensive cloud computing system.

Soon after midnight (PDT) in the US (morning UK time), the company announced “elevated error rates and latencies” for the cloud services in a area on the east coast of the US. The ripple effect appeared to disrupt platforms worldwide, with the outage tracking website showing issues with the corresponding services in different parts of the world.

Cisco’s Thousand Eyes, a tool that monitors web disruptions, also reported a surge in problems on that morning, and numerous instances located in the Virginia area, the location of Amazon’s US-East-1 region where the company stated the outage originated.
